DEFINITIONS
- Magnet - is a material or object that produces a magnetic field.
- Magnetism - is the class of physical attributes that occur through a magnetic field which allows objects to attract or repel each other.
- Magnetic field - is the region around a magnet where magnetic forces act. Field lines originate from the north pole and terminate at the south pole.
- Induced magnetism - Magnetic materials can be temporarily magnetized when place in a magnetic field.
- Permanent magnets - These magnets retain their magnetism and have fixed poles.
- Electromagnetic - These magnets are made of magnetically soft materials and can be turned on and off.
- Earth's magnetism - The Earth acts as a giant magnet with its magnetic field
- Poles - the ends of a magnet, where the magnetic forces are strongest
- Keepers - iron bars that are placed between the poles of permanent magnets to preserve the magnetic strength by providing paths for magnetic field lines between opposite poles.
